The first edition of the book came out in 1966, but it went through a few versions and editions, each with a different cast of characters providing the example dialogues. It took off as a fanart-inspiring meme after the April 2016 edition introduced a new cast of characters drawn in a more recognizably manga-ish style, foremost among them the teacher, Ellen_Baker.
